VALENTINA

Art historian and environmental guide. Her studies, focused above all on the medieval period, found inspiration precisely in the Val d’Orcia area, a place where the hills worked by man, the rows of cypresses, the medieval bell towers closely recall the splendid visions of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Duccio di Boninsegna, the three “greats” of Tuscan pictorial art.

The route starts from the church of the Madonna della Querce, a sixteenth-century sanctuary on the slopes of Montepulciano. From here we will travel along splendid vineyards and pass through some of the most famous wineries producing the Nobile di Montepulciano wine. In these areas the territory is characterized by plots of vineyards, olive groves, but also by large wooded areas, interrupted by dirt roads that lead to splendid agricultural estates. We will reach the end of the route at the Sanctuary of San Biagio, a sixteenth-century Renaissance church designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder. The building is the culmination of Renaissance studies on the centralized Greek cross plan applied to Catholic places of worship. The church was built on the site of an ancient parish church of early Christian origin dedicated to Santa Maria and subsequently, after the transfer of plebeian rights, around the year 1000, within the castle walls, to San Biagio. We will continue the walk to the historic center where the main buildings of historical-artistic interest are located and the splendid Piazza Grande, the beating heart of the town, delimited by the compact volumes of the Duomo, the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo Contucci, the Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi and of the Captain’s palace. We will end the day by visiting one of the historic cellars of Montepulciano, where we will taste excellent wines accompanied by good food.
